i never knew there was such a difference between jounior highs and middle schools...i find it very interesting how to things i thought were so alike are based on completly different phiosophies
I also want to join CMLA, I really think it will help us fully develop our teaching skills. we need to take this seriously if we want to be taken seriously by our employers. -Corbin G
There are several differences between middle schools and junior highs that I did not know about. Is either one ebtter than the other? Does one of the schools promote better learning than the other?
I didn't know there was such a big difference between junior highs and middle schools either! I've always considered them kind of the same thing. What I think is really interesting is that in middle child you could be placed as a 4th grade teacher in a elementary school or a 9th grade teacher in a high school. I think it is going to be very important to learn the different teaching styles necessary for the grades.
If you check the handout I gave you in class. It tells you when and where the next CMLA meeting is going to be held. You may want, especially If you're a LA person, to go to the special meeting in the library. You'll actually 'join' and pay your dues at the next general meeting later this month.
The question about which is better MCE or JH is definitely a personal issue. Having taught both ways, I definitely lean with the MCE - obviously, that's why I do what I do!! :)
When you apply for a job, you usually apply for a specific grade level position. If they offer you a job you don't want, you can say no. (not wise if you really need a job; take what you can get and then move around once you're there a year or so). Some schools just hire and then assign you where they need you. This is truly an issue you'll want to clarify if they school gives you a second interview.
I love the fact that several of you are realizing how important these classes and activities and offered professional organizations are to you! The WILL make a difference in your career.
I had a question that goes along with the response you gave about my question I had on friday. If the state government allows the local school district to establish their own policy on middle school on Junior High, then how can it hold schools to a certain standard of expectation when they are not given proper or any guidelines? Is it a matter of avoiding micro management? If so, shouldn't they at least give them the guidelines of a system that produces better results wether it be middle school or J.H.?
I just wanted to say that I went to the first CMLA meeting this year and for those of you who were thinking about joining, DO IT! At the very least, it will cost you $20 for you to go to a few meetings and be able to put it on your resume. But there are all kinds of informational things that sound like they will be an AWESOME help for us these next couple of years!! (And when it comes time to look for jobs too!! Great connections can be made through this organization!!!)
Also, today in class, I loved all the information we were given about planning these next few semesters. It answered so many of my questions, now I'm just worried about the Praxis IIs...If anyone's interested in a study group or something for the math or science ones, LET ME KNOW!! =)
I was also thinking of joining CMLA but I have meetings every Monday for another organization. I 'm not really sure whether or not I should join as a result. Any ideas? Andrew J
I was very interested in the topic of domains today in class. I didn't realize how much planning is actually involved in the teaching process. I think it is very helpful that the domains can break down everything into 4 parts of the teaching process.
sometimes since class is so early like at 830 AM i miss alot of stuff so this blog thing is good. i can try and come up with a question but im pretty good after reading the blog postings. if im suppose to say something intelligent or something pertaining to the class or the blog thing, I guess it would have to be that its sweet that you could teach in different schools like a high school or junior high or middle school depending on the district. like i grew up in 5th&6th 7-8 and then 9-12 but other kids in the class had like 7-9 and stuff. I don't really know if thats intelligent but im trying
Oh - I love your participation. Great questions - I feel like it's stump the instructor.
Jeffery - Great question. You have to consult the state constitution on these types of questions. The state is responsible for the providing education, but the basic decision are allotted to the local entities that provide the bulk of the funding. Honestly, at this point, there is no agreement on which is better. If you read some of the other articles or research the comparison of MC and JH, it's a divided issue.
Samantha- Thanks for the CMLA commercial!!! You're right, and you said it much better than I could have. Thanks!
Actually, that's a great issue to bring up at CMLA. That might be a great project for some of the upper classmen. They could lead study groups for those of you who haven't passed the tests. That would be excellent community service, and we're always looking for ways to serve.
Andrew - Depends on what the other organization is and where your priorities lie. You could still come to the professional development programs which are on Thursdays, and maybe you could miss your other meeting just once a month to attend CMLA. You're call.
Ashley - Just chat - discuss - give your opinions. You don't have to put questions - maybe you have some answers.
Hey im up for study group!!!! im math and history and kinda nervous...i hate that we need to take these tests they scare me...how am i going to remember everything i learn??? my brain can't hold that much! oh and having upperclassmen help would be comforting...like a mentoring thing!
ok so this has nothing to do with any of the comments but the "what do good teachers do" activity in class got me thinking...and i just started a notebook of "things i want to do in my classroom" in it i add ideas and things from past teachers and my experience...and im sure we will learn many methods we want to remember...just a suugestion but maybe we could put ideas up here to for others to share
I'm joining CMLA and I'm so excited. This year is my second year and I'm reallllly wanting to get involved. I'm joining BGSEA, CMLA, and BGSCEC. I also just started volunteering at Woodlane Schools. So far it's been a great experience. I'm working with students with extensive disabilities. Since I've never experienced this, I tried to put myself in there and really get something out of it, and I did. I'm so excited to learn more about it. Is anyone doing any volunteering?
I would love to join CMLA but there is no way that I can be at a 9pm meeting if they were on a saturday morning I could join but I think I am one of few people that a Sat would work out for.
can anyone reemail me the teaching methods I swore I saved it and now I cannot find it in my email. Thanks
Erica, I am interested in getting as much experience working with students as possible and when I saw that you volunteer it got me really excited! How would I go about volunteering? Did you just contact the school?

When your getting your job do you get to tell them what grade you want to teach or do they tell you?

I think that it is really neat that we can teach reading up to the 6th grade if that's what the school wants. -Corbin
