October 3, 2008

Hey all,

No more excuses about blogging.  It's in your external links. All you have to do is click!!  I went to the Homecoming Parade today.  Such fun!!  The band was great, and the men's chorus sounded wonderful even while walking.  I hope you were there and enjoyed it, too.

Here are the responses for class today:

1) I am so glad that you found both videos valuable and motivating!!

2) Honestly, I have seen a couple brand new teachers (actually student teachers) who had the type of rapport you saw in the teaching video today.  I can specifically remember 3 of them.  However, they were all K-3 which is a totally different ballgame than you're going to be playing.

3) You REALLY gain the respect of your students in several ways. You KNOW your content!!   You treat them with respect. You treat them as young adults with potential.  You are fair.  You have high expectations and insist that they live up to them.  You HONESTLY care about them and let them know it.  You are there for them and you BELIEVE in them and let them know that you believe in them.  You make it their class; not yours.  Engage them; let them have choices.  Love the kids and love what you're doing.  At least - these are my suggestions.

4) Mr. Riddle is the principal at Leverette.

5) The link to the video is:  http://www.,dallasisd.org/

6) Every morning we all make a choice.  We can choose to be miserable or we can choose to be happy.   I am upbeat in the mornings because I am so blessed how could I choose not to be happy?  I don't have to go to 'work'.  I get to go to class.  I get to interact with people I love and enjoy being with.  I have a mission, and I get to fulfill it with YOU!!  That's why I'm upbeat in the morning!!  Don't you get it?  I LOVE what I do, and it's such a blessing!  I can honestly say I have never felt like I have had to go to work.  I get to go to school.

7) Your assignments for October 17 are on your calendar.

Have a great couple weeks.  I truly will miss seeing you!  Enjoy your break and come back safe and ready to roll!!

Blessings,
Diann

Question...Praxis 3 is done during your first year of teaching and someone comes and observes you/grades you against Pathwise standards, correct? What if you are teaching out of state your first year? Who comes and observes you for your licsense?

just a comment if you looked at the site for Dallas ISD schools at all it says if you become a fan of "big tex" on facebook Dickie's donates clothing to the students in the area--so you should do it because most of us use facebook and it doesnt hurt you any!

The video of the teacher was great. Seeing an excellent teacher at work is always beneficial. The constant reminder of how a good teacher teaches and thinking of ways to incorporate this into how I teach, always helps keep things on track.

I loved the videos we watched in class on Friday. The first one really helped me see how interactive a teacher can be especially in middle school. The second video was so inspiring and made me want to be a teacher so bad! I really enjoyed the videos and would love to see both.

I absolutely loved those two videos we saw in class! I thought the teacher's way of teaching was exactly how I want my classroom to be! The little boy's speech was so motivating, the way he got everyone involved in that audience was awesome. I want every teacher to see that video so they know how much the students want to learn and need them. Hope everyone had a great homecoming weekend and has a good break!!

I am so excited and motivated to become a teacher after seeing those videos on friday. I know that there will be days where I will be tired and not ready for the day ahead, but I will be able to picture that little boy standing up and saying "Believe in me" and I know I will have a better mood. I especially hope that I can portray that mood in my classroom so my students are not miserable, but instead ready and excited to be in class.

i am really glad we talked about philosophys. i was pretty unclear on what they were or what they meant till we talked about them!

You are such a great teacher. Your personality really wakes me up in the mornings and your positive comments always remind me of why I am studying to be a teacher. I was talking to my family this weekend, and both my mom and dad had seen the video we watched Friday. They, too, thought it was very awesome and powerful. Thanks for your confidence boosters!

The video we watched on Friday made it easy for me to see what qualities go into being a great teacher. I liked observing the different philosophies and talking about them afterwards because I now have a better idea of what philosophy I want to think about when I am teaching. To me, seeing a teacher in action is much more beneficial then anything we can read or learn from a book.

About the reflection paper...are the 14 points what we should be using to write the paper? Or should we just state what qualities the middle school we are attending possesses or what they are lacking? Should the paper be very professional or more informative? Thanks a bunch!! Hope everyone enjoys fall break!

I love this class. It is one of my favorite classes. I feel it has really prepared for methods and I am learning so much.

That video made me cry. It was so cute and effective. I have had problems blogging, everytime I go to blog it says it cannot find my password. So everytime I go to blog I have to make a new password.

I loved the video! I think that teachers of all ages need to hear that! It reassured me that education is the profession that I want to be in! =)

Hi All,

Let me reply to a couple posts.

Kristen: If you're teaching out of state your first year, you will do a Praxis III unless the state where you've chosen to teach does it. You would not do it unless you chose to come back to teach in Ohio.

Sid -
Yes, you should be using the 14 points to write the paper? They should be your barometer for whether or not your field school fits the Middle School title. You need to analyze your school using those 14 points and supporting your opinion as to whether or not your placement is truly a middle school.

Thanks for your kind words. I do love what I'm doing, and I have all of you to thank for that!!

Enjoy the week and your Fall Break.

I enjoyed the videos that we watched in class on Friday. The one with the teacher demonstrated good ways to bring your philosophy into the classroom. She did a great job getting the class involved and to have the lessons more student taught. The other video with the student speaking to many staff members was very inspirational. I have showed so many people that video, and it truly does make me want to be a teacher, and to make a difference.

It's so amazing to see the work and reflect to see exactly how great teaching, or being a teacher, or the effect teachers have on our lives. I once had a teacher, much like the teacher in the first video, who was the reason that I can enjoy language arts/reading/writing a little bit. She was the teacher that had a philosophy of "it's all about the kids" but also knew how to get to business. With a learning disability, in the 7th grade, a student at that age can just give up as soon as the "tough" kicks them in the butt. But she was such a wonderful teacher who cared about each and every student she had and wanted to make sure they reached their potential and beyond. Which brings me to my next point. The second video. It was absolutely inspiring and made me want to become a teacher asap! (YES! I even cried a little) but it was a touching video, especially when he hit it hard about teachers, sometimes, being the only ones that students have in their lives that actually care about them. It was such an amazing video, that I went back and shared it with my co-workers (we work for a grant) to share with our Cohort of teachers that we work with and will be seeing in a couple weeks. It was just wonderful..

Oh and to top it all off, is it just me or do you love Diann Brown and the way that she makes your morning one of the best mornings you've had all week? .... She makes my Fridays, that much better :)

Everytime I think of that little boy giving that speech I get a tear in my eye! How wonderful it is to be touched in such a way that I know that I am on the right path! Have a great break everyone!

So im really enjoying my field experience but i still can't get over how different Leverette is from all experiences i have had i a middle school...i just can't believe how many of the kids talk back and give the teachers attitude...its an eyeopening experience. when ever i read that urban teaching book it reminds me of the movie Freedom Writers.

Wow, last weeks class was cool. that video really was neat. Leverette is going pretty good. It's different that's for sure and my teacher is very nice. Also, my sister is a teacher at Lake Middle School and for fall break I decided to go into school with her and I got to observe another teacher. It's great, I love it here. I can't help but want to teach in this kind of school. I'm having fun getting to know the students!

i am really enjoying going to Leverette! i love the environment and the students are really something special! How does everyone else feel about going to Leverette that is following a teacher there?

After going to McCord Middle School for my field experience for two weeks now, i get the sense that the teacher i am assigned to doesn't make learning as interesting as it could be. The students seem to be reading from their textbooks the entire period, although it IS a literature course, but there has to be a way to cover required material other than quiet reading time during class. Hopefully as the weeks continue i will get to see another side of her teaching style because i know i don't want constant in-class reading assignments for my future students.

BGDB said...

My placement at McCord is in an 8th grade math classroom. The teacher is great and really big into constructivism. She does an excellent job of teaching the students and having a good time with them while they learn...exactly how I would teach. However, I get the feeling that the material being learned is way behind the age level. Her most advanced class (2nd period) is doing mainly pre-algebra work. I know that it is close to the beginning of the year and that review is typical for the first month. It has been 2 months and the students are just now learning this stuff. It is not review! This makes me wonder what the 6th and 7th grade teachers are teaching and why this particular grade is so slow.

Thanks,
Jace

I was kind of worried about my experience in a city school because I have heard a lot of bad things, but I think I might actually prefer teaching in the city as opposed to the suburbs. It's amazing how three weeks have completely changed my mind!!

jace--i am in the same class as you only on thursdays--i saw your name on the board in there when she had me write my name on the board :)
i love that class too-but i think they seem like that is baout 8th grade material--if i understood correctly its not the "advanced" math class its just that they are further ahead--but i could be wrong-but i also remember doing this stuff in 8th grade-apparently the teacher we are working with sat in on my jr high teachers so she knew all my teachers i had. i thought that was kind of cool.

i really like my experience class. i love being able to walk around and help students as they do their work and see all the different ranges in the classes. I am really enjoying it-this is the first experience i have had that i have been more hands on and less sitting in a corner watching.

sld3389 said...

The only thing I am worried about with my field experience is that my teacher doesn't really care that I am there. She doesn't mind me being there, but she also doesn't express her liking of my help. I try to walk around and talk with the students, but when I go we always do group work from the previous class period. I hope that I am leaving some kind of a good impression on my teacher because it would help to have some honest feedback. But other than that, I like my placement. the kids are so much fun and it's rewarding to see how a different type of school system works.

I loved both videos! They were both inspiring! Seeing the teacher not only doing her job, but doing it well was very motivating and encourages me to be the best I can. The video of the kid reaching out to his teachers was very touching. Sometimes we forget why we are in school working to become a teacher and that young student gives us motivation and the extra push we need. Very good message!

I am observing at Leverette and I have had a hard time adjusting to the environment and the way the students react to the teacher and their fellow classmates. They talk back, have an attitude about everything, and do not seem that motivated to learn. Most of the students do not even bring supplies to class! They sit at their desks and do nothing and the teacher does not even try to get them to want to learn! I feel like this experience is making me not want to teach in urban schools more and more every week. The students do not appreciate what the teacher does and the teacher is done trying. It could just be the fact I am used to suburban schools since I grew up attending Sylvania schools, but I feel like this is not the typical classroom setting/situation.

Hi all,

I'm so glad to hear that most of you are enjoying and learning from both class and your field experiences. I really enjoy reading your comments and thank you for the kind words some of you have shared. Great students like you make it easy to be a decent teacher.

jmadams

See me Friday, and let's talk about your situation. If you want to consider a different placement, contact Rachel and see what she has for you.

See you all Friday as we turn the corner and start letting you all do the teaching!! (I love this part!!)
